When we were designing WisdomJr, the easiest product decision would've been a live parent dashboard: *"Aarav opened the app at 4:32 PM. He spent 18 minutes. He got puzzle #7 wrong."*
We built that, tested it with 12 families, and killed it.
What we learned
Kids who knew they were being watched in real time:
- Stopped asking questions (didn't want to seem confused)
- Gamed the metrics (answered fast instead of thinking)
- Lost the sense of owning their own progress
One kid literally asked: "Is this my phone or my mom's phone?"
The weekly digest version
Instead we ship a single email every Monday morning. It summarises the past seven days: XP earned, streak, puzzles, live classes, one highlight moment.
It turns your weekly dinner conversation into something substantive. It doesn't turn your weekday evenings into a surveillance shift.
The research
Deci & Ryan's work on intrinsic motivation has 40 years of data: external monitoring kills internal drive. Kids who feel watched perform worse long-term than kids who feel trusted.
We build for the long-term kid. So we chose the weekly digest. Sorry to anyone who wanted a Ring doorbell for their child's brain.
